Breastplates offer good protection against many types of weapons. They can be heavy and awkward, so they'll slow you down when equipped. Breastplates offer very good protection against Swords and Axes.

Where to Find

Intelligent critters like Troodonts often use them for defense. Also Dragons, Larva, and Dusk Trees sometimes drop them when defeated. As with most weapons and armor, the first upgrade is at or below 100 gold, increases its effectiveness, and costs more per level.
