Iron ore is mined from Iron Caves
You can mine from the same Iron Cave every 6 hours.

Once iron ore is in your items list, it needs to be smelted before it is useful. Tap it in your items list and select "Smelt." This requires 1 Wood for each piece of iron ore being smelted. Smelting has 50% chance of success. If it succeeds, it will turn into a piece of Iron, if it fails it will turn into a piece of Iron Slag, which can be made into Iron using the Metallurgy skill.

You can raise your chance of smelting success by getting the Weapon Smithing skills.
