Purses will keep a certain amount of your gold safe when you die. They can be bought from Merchants for 100 Food. They can also be upgraded to hold more gold (75 Food per upgrade).

Amount of gold protected:
30,000 (+0) (first 3000 gold is not lost on death)
60,000 (+1) (first 6000 gold is not lost on death)
90,000 (+2) (first 9000 gold is not lost on death)
120,000 (+3) (first 12000 gold is not lost on death)
150,000 (+4) (first 15000 gold is not lost on death)
180,000 (+5) (first 18000 gold is not lost on death)
210,000 (+6) (first 21000 gold is not lost on death)
240,000 (+7) (first 24000 gold is not lost on death)
270,000 (+8) (first 27000 gold is not lost on death)
300,000 (max cap +9) (first 30000 gold is not lost on death)

Note: these values refer to the amount of gold that you might lose when you die, and not your total amount of gold. For example, if you die with a +7 purse and 240000 gold, you will not lose the 24000 gold that you would have lost without the purse. If you hold multiple purses, only the highest level purse will count for protection against loss. Prior to April 2012 Purses had a max cap of +7 which protected only 200,000 gold.
